My Sister's Closet-REVIEW

I know I have written about My Sister's Closet before, I just wanted to go into a bit more depth on what the store means to those on a budget.

First of all, I want to say that the fist time I went, I got some great deals (http://mydefinitionofabargain.blogspot.com/2011/08/most-recent-bargains.html) but, I was attended poorly by a poor mannered teenager at the check out and was not pleased.
I just want to say that since then, that is the only time I have had an experience like that. Each time I have gone in lately, I am greeted by, what seems like, the owner. She is friendly, asks if I need help and lets me know the deals/sales going on. She even helped me find a dress for my brother's wedding when I was desperately searching. I was looking and looking and asked if she had anything red and semi formal and she said "We just got some new dresses in that would be perfect." and headed to the back to grab them. I reserved one and she  held 2 others for my sisters to try on. Very helpful and accommodating, which is how a business should be run in my opinion.

Now for my review on the store and concept itself:
I love this store! For those of you who don't know how it works, here goes:
My Sister's Closet is a consignment store. Similar to the idea of a Plato's closet but slightly different. They sell New and Used items and right now, they only carry clothing for Women and girls.
They way it works, as I understand it, is you bring your gently used or new items in and they write down your info, you sign a consent type form to allow them to sell your things and then you let them know if you want the items returned back to you if they don't want them (which they call "no thank you's) or if you want them donated.
After they take your things they tell you to call back withing a week or so to check if you need to pick up no thank you's, if  you wanted items back. Then the items they keep are placed out on the floor for 90 days (May be less if I remember right) and when an item of yours gets sold, you are credited half of the profit. Which is actually pretty good for a used item that you really didn't wear anyway, right?
If your items don't sell in that 90 day period, they donate them. And, with the money you earn, you can choose to apply it to a future purchase or take the cash instead. The money you earn is yours and you don't have to use it up in a certain amount of time. They keep track of it, and have it waiting for you whenever you need/want it.

The visual P.O.V. and set up of the store:
When you walk  in, it doesn't look like a consignment store right away. It is clean, well kept and the front room is full of mostly new items and boutique style displays of jewelry and other things. They have their selection of new shoes up front as well. The dressing rooms are off to the side next to the register and are very nice, big and practical.  Then the back of the store is where they have their used items. They have rows and rows of jeans. Their shirt racks are categorized by S M L etc. They have a section for little girls, skirts, dresses and they even have a movie area for the kids (awesome idea for those of us with kids) where they can hang out while you shop. They have a newer rack of formal dresses that you can rent or buy and I have even seen some wedding dresses on display before.
They have a clean bathroom in the back which is very appreciated by pregnant women, like myself ;)
Amongst all of this, there are shoes and purses placed all over the place through out the back.
And my favorite part of the store, is the 50% off wall located on the south wall in the back of the store. It is a great sized store for the inventory they have, not too small, not too big and empty looking.

Pricing and deals:
This store is great for those on a budget. You can find name brand, high quality items for 10% of the cost. Not only that, you can save money by bringing your things in and using the money you earn, to get different things. I look at it like trading the clothes you are tired of for clothes that is new and exciting BUT, you pay practically nothing! They do have the section up front where you can buy new and it isn't outrageously priced, it's about the same as any shop at the mall I would say.
Another great thing about the store, is that they have coupons! Crazy right? Yes, coupons that come in the mail every month (in the Home town values packet, I believe) to every household. I have seen anything from 20% off any purchase to 20% off any NEW item in the store. That means you get a discount off of already discounted items! Seriously, next time you need a shopping fix/therapy, this is the place to go. You won't feel bad afterward and you'll come out with some sweet deals.
Like I said before, there is a half off wall in the back and that, is where you get your crazy deals.
You can find nice dresses, skirts, pants, and shirts, for under 5 dollars!
If you are on a mega budget crunch, just take some of your cute and in season items in, wait for them to sell a few things and use your credit to get some new things. It's a total win win situation!

Why shop used???
Some people assume that if it's used, it must be dirty or old looking. That is probably the biggest misconception about consignment items. Yes, some clothing my look more worn than you'd like but, you don't have to buy that particular item. Keep looking until you see something that looks to your standards. I have seen things many many times in these types of stores that STILL have the original tags on. Which means, they haven't been used at all!  It's THE BEST way to get genuine quality for a tiny percentage of the cost. On top of that, they sell items that may not be sold at the department stores anymore but, are still in style. It's also nice to buy things that aren't worn by everyone. You have more of a chance of an original wardrobe if you don't shop where the whole world is shopping. It's definitely a good way to build an unique wardrobe.

The catch:
I'm sure you are wondering what the catch is or if this is too good to be true right?
Wrong. I would say the only catch is the catch that comes with any store that sells used items, you HAVE to be willing to look through everything. You never know what you will miss or what you'll find if you don't. If you grew up shopping that way, it will come easily. If not, I suggest you train yourself to do so. It won't be easy at first but, if you really want to save your money and spend it more wisely, you've got to stop buying the first thing you see on display at the mall or settling for full priced items instead of shopping sales and clearance. You will be happier in the end and soon, it will become second nature. IF, you are serious about saving money. GOOD LUCK! Let me know if posting pics of the store would help and I'll get some on here.

These are my latest purchases from My Sister's Closet:

Motherhood Maternity Shirt/Dress Originally 8.00 Got it on the 50% off wall for 4 bucks!

Leather, ankle strap wedges (wedges are my favorite) 8.00

Cute modest dress (modest dresses use more fabric which in turn, usually cost you more) only 10.00!
My total came to 18.99 after my credit of 4.50 was applied. That is a pretty good bargain if you ask me. I got a 2 dresses and a pair of leather shoes for under 20 dollars!

My Verdict:
Give it a shot!
Next time you are in Spanish Fork and have the shopping bug, stop by My Sister's Closet and I doubt you will be disappointed :)

The truth about buying "Off-season"

I wanted to show you some proof that buying on the off-season (when stores mark down items that are not in season i.e. Buying Fall/Winter clothes in Spring/Summer and vise versa) pays off, LITERALLY!
Dillard's: ORIGINALLY 34.00 PAID: 3.40 (That's 90% off, scarf included ;) Got it in 2 other colors

These are only some of the items were purchased in the Spring of  2011/10...

Dillard's 3.40 (or less)
Dillard's 3.40 got one in tan as well

Dillard's 3.40 or less

 Dillard's 3.40 or less

K-mart 3.00 Great for layering!

Most stores start getting in their Spring lines around March and have to get rid of their Winter inventory. This is THE absolute BEST time to buy for next winter!!! It's still cold outside so, you are somewhat in the mood to buy cozy stuff still but, by now, it's  marked down 75% or more!

I can honestly say  90% of my Spring/Fall/Winter wardrobe, cost me (at most) 4 bucks per item.
This is the most cost effective way of building your wardrobe, you just have to be willing to look!

It just takes one "off" season to get you ON track. Think about it, if you buy for next Winter this Spring, you don't have to worry about buying all your sweaters etc. when Fall strolls around. And while everyone else is spending triple the amount of money on overpriced winter clothing, you, will be buying next seasons wardrobe for a fraction of the cost! It's a win win, you see. You spend less while avoiding unnecessary stress and crowds!
All it takes, is a bit of patience and most of all, self-discipline. And a little bit of cash, of course.

Good luck and happy "off-season" shopping!

End of Summer Deals

Fall has officially arrived but the cold weather seems to be taking it's time. I still see people wearing  short sleeves, shorts, and especially sandals. Which means, It's the perfect time to shop the clearance racks at your favorite stores. Even though you might not be in the mood to shop summer sales, it will be well worth it, once it starts to warm up again next year.  Plus, you can still wear summer items for a few more weeks before you store it away and whip out your sweaters!

Most stores still have summer merchandise and they have it priced so low! Anything from 75 to 80% off. I personally, like to see the 90% signs but, those are sadly, rare these days. Some of the things I can count on being on sale and always buy at the end of summer are:
Swimming trunks and shorts for the Hub
Short sleeve shirts and under shirts for layering in every season
Summer dresses and skirts
Sandals are something the stores NEED to get rid of so they are always good to stock up on
Swimming suits
Capris/shorts
And any random things you know you'll  use next summer and the store has it on clearance.

Here are a few of my "end -of-summer" purchases:

JCPenny: 3.60 each shirt. Not the most amazing deal but, for layering shirts, I couldn't pass it up.

Scoop neck T's that work great under Maxi Dresses (My daily wardrobe in the summer) And these would also work to layer with in the Fall/Winter.  I get bored with all the gray and black they sell all Winter.

Tanks with lace on top and bottom.

Rue 21: $4.00 Each            They were even quarter length so, I can wear them throughout Winter.
They are made so you wear a shirt underneath and the pattern stands out more. Great buy!

My Sister's Closet: Was 12$, Half off and I had a 4$ credit from selling something. I paid $2.41
I can wear this year round, add leggings and flats for fall, pointed knee high boots for winter and as is for Spring and summer :)

My Sister's Closet: (Also summer clearance so, it was half off) I paid 6.00 for cute BUCKLE shorts

Rue 21 etc. Paid $4 bucks each.  I also got 3 shirts for the same price :)  All set for boating next year!

And there you have it, my end-of-Summer purchases so far. So go out to your favorite stores and head to the back of the store for the good clearance stuff. You do have to do a bit more sifting through the racks and it takes a little more time than just grabbing what you want. But, trust me, buying ahead for the next season, is the way to go. You end up spending about a quarter to a tenth of what you normally would. And, that to me, makes all the difference in our budget.

My shopping guide/philosophy

I have always loved shopping but haven't always had the money for it. As a kid growing up, my parent's would buy us the essentials and if I wanted anything extra, I had to pay for it myself. I am so glad that is how I was raised because, I quickly learned that I could get more things if I bought them on clearance than if I got them on display for full price.  I learned that it was best to save up for an item and then pay for it than to borrow money and owe someone just to have instant gratification. I am not an impulsive shopper because of that, and I think that's where a lot of shoppers get in trouble.

I grew up with 8 siblings so we couldn't spend very much money on outrageously over priced clothing like a lot of families do. (Not that they can afford it either) Ross became my go to store, they have good quality department store clothing for  a quarter of the cost. On top of that, if you shop clearance at Ross, you can get some amazing deals. You can at the mall too, I have found super cute and inexpensive things in the clearance section. Off season shopping is huge! It takes self discipline and patience but, when winter rolls around and I have 6 new sweaters with scarves( that I got for 2 bucks each) to wear, I'm so grateful, I got winter clothes in April! Especially because in April, you can still get away with wearing long sleeves and pants.

I have this limit in my head of how much I want to pay for something. It developed by finding a deal on certain items over and over again and I decided that if I could buy something for this price more than once, then why not every time?
Here it is: Pants 10.00. Shirts 5.00, Jewelry 2.00, Shoes 10.00 or under, Dresses 15.00 and under.
Now, there are exceptions to these base prices. My birthday, If I've wanted an item for over a year, special occasion,  if I really need and item and have searched everywhere, and if it's a staple item that I am buying for a quality not quantity purpose.
When I am shopping because I just want something new, I do a recap before I get in line, I look at each thing and if I'm in a phase where money is tighter than I'd like, I get strict with the prices and if it exceeded my limit, I put it back. SO I know everything I bought that day was a super good deal and worth buying. Then, I have no guilt and a great bargain to bring home.

My sister's Closet round 2

Guess how much these leather, peep-toe wedges were?

Only 6 dollars!!! Not bad at all. Especially because these are perfect mom shoes for me. Not too high and cute at the same time :)

Most Recent bargains!

I just discovered a store here in Spanish Fork called My Sister's Closet. It has been in town for a while but, usually the shops on Main Street that sell clothing are over priced and not my style. On the 24th of July I was walking past the Store and in the window I saw a row of shoes. They were priced at $3, $5, and $8. My kind of pricing for sure. Sadly the store was closed so we just kept walking. The next week I was running errands with Weston and I asked him to stop by there quick so I could go see if those shoes were still there. I went in and turns out they had a cute pair of green sandals and a cute pair of golden, peep-toe flats. I grabbed them and took a quick look around because Weston and Stela were in the car. I spotted a back room that looked like it had random clothing and shoes. I walked back there and sure enough, second hand stuff. I saw some cute sling back, snake skin print, peep-toe heels that were so cute! I tried them on and they were so comfy but, they looked pricey so I hesitantly looked at the price and I was surprised to see they were only $10! I went up front and got all three (2 new, 1 used)  pairs of shoes for under 20 bucks. Not bad at all :) I notices the second hand shoes were all in very good, almost new condition. It was like a DI boutique style. I liked the concept and the prices. Just wish the staff were a little more friendly to new comers.
